2. By utilizing .webP images with smaller file sizes, you can significantly improve the loading times of your web pages. In today’s fast-paced digital world, where users demand instant access to information, faster loading speeds are crucial in creating a seamless browsing experience. .webP Support on Web Browsers
.webP support has become increasingly widespread among modern web browsers, a testament to its popularity and effectiveness in enhancing web performance. This expansive support means that most users accessing your site can benefit from the advanced features that .webP images offer fully. Whether browsing on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Opera, users can enjoy the improved load times and high-quality visuals that come with .webP image files.
The trouble arises predominantly with older browsers that have not kept pace with the advancements in web technology. These browsers may not support .webP images, limiting the user experience for those who use them. This scenario, however, is progressively becoming less of an issue as updates and new versions of browsers are released with .webP support built-in. Therefore, unless your target audience primarily consists of users operating on outdated browsers, the benefits of using .webP images greatly outweigh these limitations.
We at Mallorca Graphics always add code to show a banner for visitors using “that” old web browser that doesn’t support this format to update to a newer version of their browser.
Here are the dates when the “four big” ones got .webP images support:
Chrome – November 2012
Firefox – January 2019
Microsoft Edge – October 2018
Safari – September 2020
Are There Any Downsides to Using .webP?
.webP images offer numerous advantages, but are there any potential drawbacks? NOT REALLY!!!
We at Mallorca Graphics can only point out one… If you have a website with lots of images and little storage, you only have two options: you change the photos one by one, which is very time-consuming, or you use a plugin to convert all images. And then, of course, it will take more space, as the old images are not deleted, and therefore, you require additional storage space for the converted .webP images.
Some server configurations may need adjustments to serve .webP images to users efficiently. But my harsh comment is that you should change the server as soon as possible if this is the case.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the .webP image format offers a compelling solution for web developers aiming to enhance website performance and user experience. The benefits of reduced file sizes, faster loading times, improved SEO, and versatile features make .webP a strong contender for the future of web imagery. While there are considerations, such as browser compatibility and graphic editor support, the overall advantages make .webP a valuable addition to your toolkit for creating modern, high-performing websites.. you can read more about .webP images here.
